Relux Collision

Paint protection film (PPF) is a clear, self-healing urethane layer about the thickness of three human hairs, installed over your car’s painted surfaces to absorb rock chips, road rash, and scratches before they reach the paint. Most Sacramento drivers protect the full front of the vehicle, the panels that take almost all the highway damage; owners of luxury and exotic cars often film the entire body. What your installation costs depends on the coverage you choose, the film tier, and how much disassembly your car’s bodywork requires, which is why we quote from your exact vehicle, free, usually the same day.

Relux Collision is a collision repair shop, and that matters for PPF more than most drivers realize. The panel discipline and disassembly skills that factory certification demands are what separate an invisible, decade-lasting film installation from one with lifting edges and trapped dust.

What Paint Protection Film Does

PPF was developed to protect helicopter rotor blades before they ever touched a car, and the material still works the same way: an 8- to 10-mil thermoplastic urethane film with an elastomeric top coat that absorbs impacts and flows back flat. In practice, that means:

If you’ve heard the term clear bra, that’s the same product. “Clear bra” is the older term from the days when film only covered the front bumper and the leading edge of the hood. Modern paint protection film covers as much or as little of the car as you choose.

The Film We Install

We install professional-grade, self-healing paint protection film from major manufacturers: optically clear, backed by the manufacturer’s warranty against yellowing and delamination, and available in gloss and satin finishes. We’re deliberate about film selection. The right film for a daily-driven SUV isn’t always the right film for a satin-finish exotic, and we’ll tell you which we’d put on your car and why when we quote it.

Every film we install is computer-cut for your exact vehicle model before it touches the car. More on why that matters below.

Why A Collision Shop Installs PPF Better Than A Tint Shop

Search for a PPF installer near me in Sacramento, and you’ll mostly find tint and wrap shops. Some do respectable work. But there’s a structural difference in how a body shop approaches film, and it shows at the edges, literally.

We remove panels; tint shops wrap around them. The difference between an invisible installation and an obvious one is whether the film edge is wrapped and sealed behind the bodywork or trimmed short of it.

Removing bumpers, door handles, badges, and mirror caps to tuck film edges is disassembly work, exactly what a collision shop does every day, on the exact fasteners and clips your car uses.

We also know what’s under the paint. PPF locks in whatever is beneath it for the next ten years, and our estimators read paint the way tint shops can’t: previous repairs, blend edges, factory orange peel, clear-coat depth. If a panel needs paint correction or genuine repair before it’s filmed, we can do that work in-house rather than sealing a flaw under urethane.

And we respect the sensors. Modern bumpers and fenders carry parking sensors, radar, and camera housings. A shop that recalibrates ADAS systems after collision repair won’t blind your car’s safety hardware with a careless film edge.

One more thing: if a filmed panel is ever damaged in an accident, the shop that repairs the panel and the shop that re-films it are in the same building. The warranty conversation happens in one place.

PPF for Luxury And Exotic Vehicles

This is the work the shop is built around. Relux Collision repairs and protects Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, BMW, Audi, and Land Rover vehicles, and PPF on these cars is a different discipline. Carbon-fiber aero pieces, satin factory finishes, aluminum panels, and seven-figure paint-to-sample colors leave no margin for a stretched pattern or a heat gun in the wrong hands. Owners bring cars to us from well beyond Sacramento for exactly this reason.

Our Process

STEP 1:

Inspection and honest scoping. We assess the paint panel by panel and agree on the coverage plan with you, including anything that should be corrected or repaired first.

Insurance
STEP 2:

Decontamination and prep. Full wash, clay bar, and solvent wipe. Film magnifies whatever it’s laid over, so nothing goes on over bonded contaminants.

planning
STEP 3:

Paint correction, if needed. Swirls and defects are polished out before filming. This step is quoted separately and skipped when the paint doesn’t need it.

Painting
STEP 4:

Computer-cut patterns, panels off where it counts. Your vehicle’s exact pattern is plotted and cut by machine, with no knife blades near your paint, and edges are wrapped behind disassembled bodywork.

Reassembly
STEP 5:

Installation and cure. Film is applied with slip solution, squeegeed, and heat-set. A full front is typically a same-week job; a full body takes longer, especially on exotics that need extensive disassembly.

QC-Check

Warranty

The film itself is warranted by its manufacturer against yellowing, cracking, peeling, and delamination, and Relux Collision stands behind the quality of the installation. We’ll walk you through the exact warranty coverage for your film and coverage tier with your quote, in writing, before any film goes on. Either way, the warranty conversation happens with one shop: ours.

PPF Vs Ceramic Coating Vs Vinyl Wrap: An Honest Comparison

Ceramic coating is chemistry, not armor. It’s a liquid polymer that bonds to paint, adding gloss, slickness, and easier washing, and it does not stop rock chips. Ceramic is a great finishing layer, including when applied over PPF, but it isn’t an alternative to PPF.

If a detailer tells you ceramic replaces PPF, they’re selling you the product they have.

A vinyl wrap changes how the car looks; PPF protects how it already looks. Wrap film is roughly half the thickness of PPF, prioritizes color and finish over impact absorption, and typically lasts three to seven years, compared to about ten for PPF.

If what you actually want is a new color, a satin finish over factory gloss, or brand graphics on a work vehicle, a wrap is the right tool, and we’d rather point you there than sell you the wrong film. We install vehicle wraps too. And if you want both worlds, colored PPF now exists in limited ranges; worth a conversation.

When PPF wins, you love the car’s current finish and want it to look this way in 10 years still. That’s the job paint protection film was made for.

What Drives The Cost Of Ppf In Sacramento

We don’t publish one-size price lists, because they’d be wrong for your car in both directions. What actually moves a PPF quote:

Coverage tier

A partial front, a full front, an extended front, and a full body are genuinely different amounts of film and labor.

Bodywork complexity

Deep creases, aggressive aero, and sensor housings take longer to film invisibly than simple panel shapes.

Disassembly

Wrapping edges behind bumpers, handles, and badges is what makes film disappear, and some vehicles come apart much less willingly than others.

Film and finish

Satin films and premium tiers cost more than standard gloss.

Paint condition

If a panel needs correction (or real repair) before filming, we'll show you why before we do anything.

The estimate is free, specific to your vehicle, and honest about which tier you actually need:

Paint Protection Film FAQs
Is paint protection film worth it?

If you plan to keep the car more than a couple of years, drive Sacramento’s highways regularly, or care about resale value, usually yes. After 30 years of repainting rock-chipped bumpers and hoods, we can tell you two things for certain: prevention costs less than the accumulated damage over a car’s life, and a repainted panel never carries the value of untouched factory paint. PPF is the only product that prevents that damage rather than fixing it afterward.

How long does PPF last?

A quality film professionally installed lasts around a decade, and manufacturer warranties typically cover most of that lifespan. Cheap film or rushed installation can fail in two or three years, which is most of what gives PPF a mixed reputation.

Is a clear bra the same thing as PPF?

Yes. “Clear bra” is the legacy name for front-end paint protection film. Same material, older vocabulary.

Does PPF damage paint when it's removed?

Not when the paint is factory, and the film is quality: professional removal with heat leaves original paint unmarked. The caution is repainted panels. If a panel was resprayed poorly, film removal can lift weak paint. This is exactly why we inspect and disclose paint condition before installation, panel by panel.

Can I wash and wax a car with PPF?

Yes. Wash normally after the first week. Skip abrasive polishes on the film; a ceramic coating over the PPF is the better play for gloss and slickness.

Can you install PPF over a repaired or repainted panel?

Yes, once the refinished paint has fully cured. Filming too early is a classic tint shop mistake that traps solvents beneath the film. As a collision shop, we handle this sequencing constantly: repair, refinish, cure, then film, all under one roof.

How long does installation take?

A full front is typically a same-week job; a full body takes longer, especially on exotics that need extensive disassembly. We give you an exact timeline with your quote and stick to it.

Do you install PPF on Teslas?

Constantly. Tesla paint is notoriously thin-skinned, and Tesla owners are among our most frequent PPF customers. Model-specific patterns cover the high-impact zones Tesla’s own forums complain about.
